Uganda/Inauguration of the Luigi Giussani Secondary School

Inauguration of the Luigi Giussani Secondary School

Kampala, February 3, 2012

“To educate is to communicate one’s self, to communicate one’s way of approaching reality,” offered to the young person’s freedom. Thus “education is risky because we place it in the fragile hands of freedom; here, we understand our limit as human beings as we intuit the unfathomable depths of the other’s mystery” (Luigi Giussani, The Risk of Education, Crossroad, New York, 1995, 110-119.)

These words of Fr. Giussani came to my mind immediately as I thought of you, dear friends, who have taken an initiative, so decisive for everyone, of opening a school for the education of the young, that they might have adequate reasons for living and a hope for facing the adventure of existence in whatever situation.

I find it moving to think that this school was born of the passion for the destiny of their children that Rose’s women learned from her. They asked themselves, “Who will help them when we are no more? How will they become adults capable of taking their own decisions, if not by going to school?” I am amazed that they are not concerned for material goods, but for a much more important good, on which all the others depend—their children’s destiny, that is not realized by magic, but only through education. Rose’s women break rocks and make necklaces for this, happy in their sacrifice–giving their lives, and not only figuratively–for their children.

All of us must learn from them: “No one has greater love than to lay down his life for his friends,” Jesus said.

My wish is that the children who will attend the Luigi Giussani School might feel themselves looked upon with the very eyes with which Jesus looked upon people. Look at your students like this, as you teach your lessons, as you question them and correct their exercises, with the sympathy and charity that will never permit you to be scandalized at their limitations, but will make you attentive to note and to value every step, however big or small, that they take toward maturity.

As you lead them, wish for them to become greater than yourselves, as all fathers and mothers want for their children.

Today, you take up the task of education, to which Fr. Giussani gave the whole of his life, pointing out the way to us. Live it with his enthusiasm, knowing that you are collaborating with God in building the future, which passes necessarily through the education of youth.

Thank you for the witness you are giving us.

Inaugurazione Scuola Superiore “Luigi Giussani”

Kampala, 3 febbraio 2012
